Vape Wire & Wick

Check out our range of wire and wick available to buy online.

Wire and wick are two of the most important components when it comes to rebuildable vape tanks. These are used in place of replacement vape coils. We offer several different wire materials, as well as different kinds of cotton. This allows you to create even more of your own vape customisations.

Why Should I Build My Own Vape Coils?

When using any vape tank, there are two main parts that need to be replaced or maintained. The e juice is always going to get lower as you are using it. The other part is the coil. These are often found in packs and cost on average £10 – £12.

If you purchase a rebuildable vape tank, you can create your own coils. This not only provides more customisation options, but cost savings. By wrapping your own coils, you can save massively over the life span of a tank.

Many times, a coil simply needs new cotton. A quick dry burn and fresh wick can renew the coil, which isn’t possible with a standard sub-ohm coil.

Vape coil wire often have a coating of sucralose from E Liquids on them. This causes a drop in performance and flavour. By firing a coil with no wick, the heat causes the debris to heat and disintegrate.

What Does AWG Mean?

AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. This is a standard sizing unit for wire. The higher the AWG, the thinner the wire. The lower the AWG, the thicker the wire.

As an example, 24awg wire is 0.51mm in diameter. In comparison, 34awg wire is 0.127mm in diameter.

Thinner coil wire for vape devices is not very useful due to its strength, but is great for fancy coil builds, such as Alien Coils.

What Are The Most Popular Vae Wire Sizes?

Each wire size usually has a specific use in coil building.

For a simple round wire build, a coil wrapped using standard wire, it is common to use anywhere from 22awg to 28awg. This would depend on what type of atomiser it is being used in.

For more exotic coils, a thicker inner core would be used with a thin wrap wire. Wire used for wrapping the cores would typically be 34awg or higher.

What Is A Vape Clapton Coil?

A Clapton coil is a thicker wire wrapped with a thinner outer wire. It was named the Clapton coil as it resembles a guitar string. Fused Claptons are also created using two inner core wires and fusing them together with a wrap wire.

Coils like this are used to create more surface area for your e juice to vaporise from. This increases vapour production and flavour.

What Are The Best Coils For RTA?

With any new RTA, we recommend starting simple. When our team tries a new device, we always start with a simple round wire coil. 24awg Nichrome wire with 6 wraps at 2.5mm ID comes in at 0.4 Ohms for a single coil and 0.2 Ohms for a dual coil. From there you can increase the coil size or number of wraps. You could also go for a more exotic coil build.

When you are building your vape coils, make sure you are following basic battery safety and ohms law. You can read more in our Ohms Law Guide.

What Does ID Stand For In Rebuildable Coils?

The ID of a coil is inner diameter. This is the diameter of the tool it was wrapped around. A lower coil ID would mean less wire has been used so the resistance would be lower. A higher ID would mean more wire has been used to achieve the same number of wraps.

What Is The Difference Between Kanthal and Nichrome?

Kanthal is also known as KA1. This is an FeCrAl alloy made from iron, chromium and aluminium. This alloy has a higher resistance than Nichrome and is often used in MTL style coils. Using 24awg Kanthal, a 6 wrap 2.5mm ID coil would be 0.5 Ohms.

Nichrome (also known as Ni80) is a nickel chromium alloy. Nichrome has a lower overall resistance than Kanthal. This is generally used in more exotic coils to keep the resistance low. Using 24awg Nichrome, a 6 wrap 2.5mm ID coil would be 0.4 Ohms.

Do I Have A Nickel Allergy With Coils?

A small amount of the population suffer from a nickel allergy when vaping. This is due to the nickel content in Nichrome. It can present itself in the form of a sore throat or coughing.

For most people, this can be easily resolved by using Kanthal for vape coils rather than Nichrome vape coil wire.

What Is Used For Vape Wick?

Cotton is used as a vape wicks in coils. This is pulled through the rebuildable coils and the tails of the cotton into wicking ports. This allows the e juice to wick through a capillary action and get to your coil. The e cig wicks are saturated with vape juice and the heat from the coil leads to vaporisation. How Do I Build My Own Vape Coils?

We’ve created a helpful guide for you to get on the journey of building your own coils. There are also a number of useful guides on YouTube which may help you with your specific device. Remember, it doesn’t have to be a work of art. As long as your coil works and is safe, that is all that is needed.

What Is Mesh Used For In Vaping?

Mesh atomisers became popular during 2018 and beyond. The idea is that mesh has a larger surface area than a standard coils so creates better flavour. No coils need to be wrapped and a new piece of mesh can just be inserted. This idea carried over to replaceable coils as mesh coils provide more consistent flavour.
